In Room 5, we spend most of our morning focusing on phonemic awareness and beginning reading skills. This time is spent in both a large group setting and with small group instruction. This format allows us to focus on phonemic awareness skills, phonics, letter recognition, sight word development, and writing.
To support our reading program, Mrs. Cave, our reading specialist, works with chosen students for additional practice. Because reading is a priority at Central Elementary, all kindergarten children will have regularly scheduled library times with Mrs. Dugger and periodic visits to the Public Library. As parents, you can also support your child's reading progress at home by reading to your child and listening to your child read. Throughout the year I will be sending games, activities and paper books for you to do with your child. Please take the time to show your child you value his/her learning.
My expectation is that you will spend time reading
with your child every day.
